Raymond A. “Spud” Tompkins

78, passed away on July 22, 2026, in Lexington, Kentucky. Born on April 8, 1948, in Dayton, Ohio, to the late Edward and Patsy Tompkins, Raymond lived a life defined by loyalty, love, and service.

A proud veteran of the United States Armed Forces, Raymond served in the Army during the Vietnam Conflict and in the Army National Guard during Operation Desert Storm. Raymond also worked for 27 years at IMI Norgren (formerly Mosier Industries), wrapping up his work there in the shipping department in 2006.

Beneath Raymond’s stoic exterior was a sharp wit, a ready laugh, and a generous heart that always rooted for the underdog. He was a sports fan who faithfully cheered for the Cincinnati Reds, the Dayton Flyers, and his beloved Cleveland Browns, reminding anyone who’d listen, that he had been a fan since they were the only NFL team in Ohio. He was grounded and down-to-earth about what brought him joy and made him laugh. Raymond loved a tough Sudoku, a classic Eastwood Western, and a laugh-out-loud comedy (always with a shout out to Pookie!).

During the final three years of his life, he found camaraderie and support among the staff and residents at Sayre Christian Village, where he played bingo every Wednesday and Friday, frequently joking that his winnings in quarters would pay his rent.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 47 years, LaVerne Tompkins; his parents; his son, Scott Shock; and his grandson, Dillon Mason.

Left to honor his memory are his children, daughters, Pamela (Eric) Mason and Heather (Jennifer) Tompkins; sons, Raymond (Becky) Tompkins Jr. and Sean (Kimby) Tompkins; and his cherished grandchildren, Isabel Mason, Bayley and Aleksys Shock, Kenzleigh and Karson Bosarge, and Savannah, Sophie, and Brooks Tompkins.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the Bluegrass Hospice Care Team for ensuring Raymond’s final days were peaceful, restful, and surrounded by love. Those wishing to honor Raymond's memory are invited to make a contribution to Bluegrass Care Navigators (bgcarenav.org/give) or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org/donate), an organization very dear to Raymond's heart.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 25, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Preble Memory Gardens Funeral Center, 3377 US Route 35 East, West Alexandria, OH 45381. A funeral service will begin at 1:00 PM, with burial to follow at Preble Memory Gardens Cemetery.
