Penny Wendel (Shumard)

58, of Greenville, formerly Lewisburg, joined her parents and the Lord in Heaven, on Friday, February 28, 2025.

She was born January 28, 1967, in Rock Island, Illinois, to the late Lawrence and Loretta B. (O’Dell) Shumard.

In addition to her parents, Penny was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley Combs; and her grandparents, Ulace and Gladys O’Dell.

She is survived by her daughters, Brittany (Justyn) Pilkington and Brooke Combs; grandchildren, Sienna and Dalton; siblings, Jeanelle Felix, Cheryl Brannon, and Carla (Henry) Lawrence; nephews, Corey and Nelson Werner; niece, Whitney Lawrence; and beloved cat, Pearl.

The world became a little less colorful with the passing of Penny, who left us with hearts full of memories and laughter. Penny was a bright spirit- funny, caring, and always ready to share a story (or two, or three). She never met a stranger, only future friends, and her warmth made everyone feel at home in her presence.

Penny led a life as vibrant as the hummingbirds and monarch butterflies she so lovingly collected. She found joy in the little things, whether it was watching her favorite Disney movies—especially Winnie the Pooh—or bringing a smile to the faces of those she cared for as a devoted nurse’s aide. Her residents adored her, and she loved them just as much. Her kindness and humor made the world a better place, one heartfelt conversation at a time.

Penny has finally found her peace, but her spirit will forever flutter in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Her family will miss her dearly, but they take comfort in knowing that she can breathe easy now, her spirit can rest, and she will always be surrounded by the love and beauty she deserved.

A visitation will be held Friday, March 7 from 6PM to 7PM at PREBLE MEMORY GARDENS FUNERAL CENTER, West Alexandria.  A time for sharing memories and stories will begin at 7PM.  Penny will be inurned with her mom at Preble Memory Gardens Cemetery.
